Children and Youth Advocate for Library Services

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Director, responsible for actively developing and maintaining relationships with the City of Toronto, other key agencies, organizations and service providers for children and youth and for participating in the overall management of library service to children and youth.
DUTIES
AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
§
Represents Toronto Public Library on a variety of external groups, community and professional organizations, agencies, committees and corporations related to the development of services for children and youth in the City of
Toronto
§
Recommends library participation in initiatives designed to further the city’s child and youth agenda
§
Provides input to Toronto Public Library’s Public Service and Planning staff on other city programs to ensure a coordinated response to wider municipal issues related to children and youth
§
Acts as a key resource in the development and promotion of new services to children and youth
§
Develops proposals for joint programs and services with other agencies
§
Seeks funding opportunities for the development or expansion for the Library’s services for children and youth, in consultation with the Foundation and Planning, Policy and E-Service Delivery
§
Promotes library services, stimulates communication and liaison with cultural, recreational and educational organizations, community agencies, and the publishing industry and its associations
§
Plans, implements and evaluates programs and services to ensure that they meet customer needs, are cost-effective and support the organization’s strategic agenda
§
Effectively communicates policies, programs and services
§
Develops goals and objectives for the area of responsibility and monitors operation in relation to these goals
§
Serves as media contact for Children’s and Youth services as required
§
Hires new staff; transfers, promotes, approves wage increases and confirms performance evaluations
§
Disciplines, terminates, participates in grievance procedures and administers collective agreements as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
§
Post-graduate university degree in library or information science from an accredited program, or a recognized library degree equivalent
§
Experience in managing a team of professional and support staff, preferably in the area of responsibility
§
Proven ability in change leadership
§
Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and collaborative work approaches with both internal and external contacts
§
Committed to providing efficient, responsive and innovative service to clients
§
Demonstrated capacity for service planning, problem solving, results orientation and creativity
§
Highly developed oral and written communication skills
§
Superior facilitation and interpersonal skills
§
Knowledge of developments in library field and relevant legislation

SALARY:
$90,599.60 - $112,312.20
per annum (2010 Rates)
